The Skin
Our skin is the first line of defense against different germs that are attacking our body on a daily basis. Additionally, it is the largest system of our body, covering more than 20 square feet of surface area in the average adult. The skin has many key functions which include being a protective covering, preventing bacteria, viruses, and other substances from entering our body. It protects our internal organs from injury, and it helps regulate the temperature of our body through sweating.
As we become older, our skin loses its elasticity, strength, and fatty tissue layer. The skin thins and sags and wrinkles appear. Substances from oil and sweats glands decrease, producing dry skin and itching.
There are things we can do to protect our skin, such as use of a sunscreen every day, especially if you will have direct exposure to the sunlight. You should drink plenty of water to keep your skin well hydrated. it is also important to have a healthy and well balanced diet. In addition, always wear shoes to avoid having a breakdown of the skin on your feet. Avoid scratching to prevent tears on your skin, and keep your fingernails short and clean at all times.
